On behalf of every man looking out for every girl, you are the god and the weight of her world.
Awhile back Mr. Enforcer posted on his Xanga, commenting that it annoyed him when people posted song lyrics unaccompanied by explanation or analysis. This is my retort.
When you, Evan posted this probably months ago you followed it up with an analysis of a Cake song. Cake is a great band. We all know this. I am not denying this. But it is music devoid of emotions.
The song (Short Skirt, Long Jacket, i think) you chose to analyze makes a good example of this. Most of their other songs are under a persona, be it a music patron of old, or an opera singer, that further eases their attempt at keeping it cool. Cake is cool band and thats all it is. It isn't personal or emotional or applicable to life in most cases.
The reasons I would post a music quote would be to show the way I am feeling right at that point, for the whole day or about a particular situation, also to send a message to another reader, or to pose as an epigraph (I believe it's called, or maybe epitaph) to set the mood for what one was about to read if the reader wasn't automatically turned off by the quote and chose not to continue. Never would I post a Cake quote to convey an emotion or personal problem or philosophical quandarry. It's just not that kind of music.
So in my opinion, most allusions and quotes do not need introductions or explanations. Explanations, if the writer would want others to know the reason behind the quote, can be surmised by just knowing the person and where they are right then in there life. I, as a writer of an exclusively Xangan nature, would like the readers to make up their own damn mind about the quote.
I would love it if readers would comment on their recognition of the quote and input their own interpretation of it and maybe if they understood my intention with the quote, add some advice or pose a different outlook on my situation. But I know that instead of this I will recieve some, if any comments at all, biting remarks in regards to my degradation of Cake's music and my failure to acknowledge the obvious metaphors of real emotions in their music. So go ahead and tell me what you think. There's always a quote supporting and opposing every situation.
